Family activities
Family activities are a really important part of the project.
As well as a chance to have fun together and learn new skills, each family will have the chance to work towards the John Muir Award.
Altogether there are 3 family activity days in South Tyneside and two residentials at the Thurston Outdoor Centre.

John muir award
This is an award you can work towards together as a family.
John Muir was the founder of the World's first national park and his environmental work fits well with the outdoor theme of this project.
Altogether families need to spend at least 4 days working for this award. These can easily be covered during your time spent at Thurston and during family activity days.
There are 4 themes you need to cover: discover, explore, conserve and share.

Thurston Residentials
There are two Thurston residentials: one week early in the course and a weekend nearer to the end of the year. These are for the young people, at least one parent or carer and any of their siblings who are over 8 years and under 16. Unfortunately we can't take anyone younger than 8 because of the activities we will be doing.
During the week here will be activities for families together and for young people and adults separately including a range of outdoor activities and a creative arts activity. It will be a chance to get started on your John Muir Award as you discover the area around Thurston and explore it by different means.
The weekend will have more challenging activities and will be a real test of how well your family can work as a team.

activity days
There are three activity days which will be held locally in South Tyneside. These will take us out into different natural areas like the coast or nature reserves and will be a chance to work on the 'conserve' section of your John Muir Award. You could be making bird or bat boxes, surveying local wildlife or planting trees as well as fun outdoor activities like family games with a picnic or barbecue.
These days are for the whole family and siblings under the age of 8 are welcome to come along.
